Special Issue on the Practice of Clinical Data Management Worldwide

Call for Manuscripts

December 26, 2020

The fields of clinical data management and clinical data science are experiencing tremendous growth worldwide. This rapid growth, however, is presenting the field with some unanticipated challenges. These challenges are taking many different forms, ranging from the development and deployment of advanced technologies, to the integration and processing of multiple streams of data, to the recruitment, training, and retention of professionals from markedly different specialty areas. Data management professionals are expected to operate at the highest levels of excellence in all areas of practice. This special issue is designed with those expectations in mind.

The purpose of this special issue will be to introduce the readership of JSCDM to the growing field of clinical data management/clinical data science, as practiced today across the world. We wish to include manuscripts from all continents in which data management is practiced. We are expecting the special issue to consist of approximately 7 to 9 peer refereed papers, 5 to 8 double-spaced pages in length, with references to the published literature. Interested authors are asked to submit a 1-page proposal, covering the four required points below, through the JSCDM portal (www.jscdm.org) by February 15, 2021. Authors with meritorious submissions will be invited to submit a more extensive 3-page expanded manuscript for further consideration by April 15th, 2021, and then a final version by August 1, 2021. All manuscripts submitted will go through a rigorous scientific and editorial review process. In the event that multiple submissions are received for a given country or region of the world, editorial staff will select the best candidates for subsequent review and publication. We would like to hear voices and perspectives from: Africa, Asia, Australia / New Zealand, Central America / Caribbean, Europe, Middle East, North America, South America.

Each submission, from 1-page abstracts to complete paper submissions must include information on each of the required components below in their submissions:

·  All manuscripts accepted for publication will be 5 to 8 pages in length (excluding references), a minimum of 7 references, and a maximum of 2 copy-ready figures/tables

·  Description of all major practice sectors within a country (i.e., industry, academe, nonprofits).

·  Relative to a specific country/region:

o Brief history of the profession in that country/region

o Description of how work varies across the aforementioned sectors

o Role of biomedical research in the country’s economic and scientific enterprise

o Recruitment, training, and education of clinical data management/data science professionals

o Unique strengths, challenges, laws or regulatory issues in a given country/region

·  All authors are encouraged but not required to have a practitioner as well as an academic from the designated country/region on the author team. Someone from SCDM’s Academic Committee may serve in lieu of an academic from a given country, if needed.

Submissions lacking information on the points above may not be considered for further review/acceptance.

Timelines (due dates):

·  Abstract (1 page) - February 15, 2021

·  Abbreviated draft version (3 pages) - April 15, 2021

·  Competed manuscript (5 to 8 double-spaced pages) - August 1, 2021
